Does KanCare (Kansas Medicaid) cover physical therapy?

Answer

Physical therapy (PT) is generally covered under KanCare when it is medically necessary and ordered by a qualified provider — for example, to rehabilitate after surgery, an injury, illness, or stroke, or to address a developmental need. As with other therapies, coverage for members under 21 is broad under Medicaid's EPSDT benefit, which covers medically necessary services for children even when adult limits would be tighter.

Expect your KanCare managed-care plan to require a referral or physician order, an evaluation by a licensed physical therapist, and prior authorization for an ongoing course of treatment. Plans may apply visit limits or require periodic review to continue services, and the rules can differ between managed-care organizations. Using an in-network PT provider helps keep costs predictable.

Because PT is frequently provided alongside occupational or speech therapy, confirm that each service is authorized under your plan so treatment isn't interrupted partway through.

Please note: this is general information, not coverage, medical, or legal advice. Benefits, networks, and fees change often — always verify your current coverage directly with the provider and your own plan (KanCare managed-care plan, employer, or insurer) before scheduling care.
