Does KanCare (Kansas Medicaid) cover occupational therapy?

Answer

Occupational therapy (OT) is generally covered under KanCare when it is medically necessary and ordered by an appropriate provider. As with other therapies, coverage tends to be strongest for children: under Medicaid's EPSDT benefit, medically necessary OT for members under 21 is typically covered, including services that support development, daily-living skills, sensory needs, and fine-motor function.

For adults, OT is commonly covered for rehabilitation after an injury, illness, surgery, or stroke, though plans may apply visit limits or require periodic re-authorization. Expect your KanCare managed-care plan to require a referral or prescription, an evaluation by a licensed occupational therapist, and prior authorization for an ongoing course of treatment. The exact rules — number of sessions, allowed settings, and documentation — can differ between MCOs.

Because OT is often delivered alongside speech or physical therapy, confirm with the provider whether each discipline is separately authorized under your plan so nothing lapses mid-treatment.

Please note: this is general information, not coverage, medical, or legal advice. Benefits, networks, and fees change often — always verify your current coverage directly with the provider and your own plan (KanCare managed-care plan, employer, or insurer) before scheduling care.
